Swachh Bharat

Government of Andhra Pradesh encouraged all citizens to adopt "Swachh Bharat" and provided financial support to build toilets for all.

Thotlavalluru Village Development Trust started by Dr. P. Rajamohan Rao & Family also supplimented Government Programme by providing financial assistance to the poor people of the village to build toilets at their homes, in addition to the support provided by the Government of A.P.

Due to joint efforts, almost all households have toilets now, barring a few. This was only possible due to active participation of the MDO, MRO and other officials of the Government and the Sarpanch of the village.

Constructing Toilets, Building Better Villages
The Back to the Roots Project of the Art of Living has facilitated the construction of toilets in Andhra Pradesh in the last four years.

In June 2014, 20 toilets built under the BTTR project were inaugurated in Thotlavalluru, Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh. Youth Leadership Program trainer Sudhakar Veeravalli, Kala Alagappan and their team facilitated the construction of toilets and drew attention to a serious health and hygiene issue.

Ms. Kala Alagappan, from Karnataka, has been training youth leaders in rural India under the Art of Living programs. Flushing out the unsanitary practice of defecating in the open, Kala has played an instrumental role in making the villagers take a step towards better health practices.

A veteran in developmental work at the grass roots, Kala noticed that many of the houses in Totlavallur were huts, with no provision for toilets. To connect with the people, she started a nagara sankeertana (the practices of walking and singing bhajans that is common in villages), and visited every part of the village. Soon the children and women joined her during the sankeertana. Kala became a familiar face in the village, understanding their needs and offering them aid.
